The spread of enlightment to other monarchs and results

The spread of enlightment soon reached the other monarchs in Europe. The philosophers hoped the spread of enlightenment would cause monarchs to rule justly. Frederick the Great granted religious freedoms, reduced censorship, and improved education. He also abolished torture, and reformed the justice system. Joseph II of Austria introduced legal reforms. He also introduced freedom of the press and supported freedom of worship. Catherine the Great also supported these philosophies, she exchanged many letters with Voltaire, and even though she ruled with absolute power, she seeked to reform Russia. None of her goals were accomplished though, because her commision couldn't deliver. Catherine later changed her enlightened ideas, crushing the serfs.
