Frederick the Great
Frederick ll, also know as Frederick the Great was the king of Prussia from 1740 to 1786. He comitted himself to reforming Prussia. He gave people many religious freedoms that they didn't have before and improved education. He changed the justice system and stopped the use of torture. He believed that serfdom was wrong, but he did nothing to end it because he needed the support of wealthy landowners. He never tried to change the existing social structure. People say that his most important contribution was his attitude towards being king. He called himself "the first servant of the state." He made it clear that his goal was to strengthen his country.

Catherine the Great
The ruler in europe most admired by the philosophes. She ruled Russia from 1762 to 1796. She ruled with absolute authority and eventually put in place limited reforms. Her enlightened ideas changed after the uprising of the serfs.Catherine favored an end to serfdom however, the revolt convinced her she needed the nobles' support to keep her throne. Catherine sought access to the black sea and had two wars with the Ottoman turks for supremacy over the shores. Her armies won the north shore and Russia gained the right to send ships through Ottoman-controlled straits. Catherine also expanded his empire westward into Poland. By the end of Catherines reign, she enlarged the empire of russia.
The spread of enlightment to other monarchs and results
The spread of enlightment soon reached the other monarchs in Europe. The philosophers hoped the spread of enlightenment would cause monarchs to rule justly. Frederick the Great granted religious freedoms, reduced censorship, and improved education. He also abolished torture, and reformed the justice system. Joseph II of Austria introduced legal reforms. He also introduced freedom of the press and supported freedom of worship. Catherine the Great also supported these philosophies, she exchanged many letters with Voltaire, and even though she ruled with absolute power, she seeked to reform Russia. None of her goals were accomplished though, because her commision couldn't deliver. Catherine later changed her enlightened ideas, crushing the serfs.
